Course description

The subject of the “Project Management” discipline is the principles and regularities inherent in projects in various spheres of human activity, as well as methods and means of successful implementation of projects.

The purpose of studying the discipline “Project Management” is to provide a full volume of systematized basic knowledge in the field of project management and to provide an opportunity, based on practical examples and tasks, to consolidate the key skills necessary for successful project management in organizations from various fields of activity.

The main tasks of the “Project Management” discipline are the study of basic concepts in the field of project management; mastering project management methodology; mastering the toolkit of project management at various stages of its life cycle based on modern professional software.

Requirements for knowledge and skills
When studying the “Project Management” discipline, students of higher education acquire the following competencies (ability):

Integral competence (IC):
IR1. The ability to identify and solve complex economic tasks and problems, to make appropriate analytical and managerial decisions in the field of economics or in the learning process, which involves conducting research and/or implementing innovations under uncertain conditions and requirements.

General competencies (CG):
ZK2. Ability to abstract thinking, analysis, and synthesis.
ZK3. Ability to motivate people and move towards a common goal.
ZK5. Ability to work in a team.
ZK6. Ability to develop and manage projects.

Special (professional) competences (SK):
SK2. Ability to professional communication in the field of economics in a foreign language.
SK8. Ability to assess possible risks, and socio-economic consequences of management decisions.
SK11. The ability to plan and develop projects in the field of economy, to implement its informational, methodical, material, financial, and personnel support.
SK14. Ability to develop information and computer systems for various purposes, evaluate and ensure their quality, and manage IT projects.

Program learning outcomes:
PR01. Formulate, analyze, and synthesize solutions to scientific and practical problems.
PR02. To develop, substantiate, and make effective decisions on the development of socio-economic systems and management of subjects of economic activity.
PR04. Develop socio-economic projects and a system of complex actions for their implementation, taking into account their goals, expected socio-economic consequences, risks, legislative, resource, and other restrictions.
PR06. Evaluate the results of one’s own work, demonstrate leadership skills, and the ability to manage personnel and work in a team.
PR10. Apply modern information technologies and specialized software in socio-economic research and management of socio-economic systems.
PR12. To substantiate management decisions regarding the effective development of economic entities, taking into account goals, resources, limitations, and risks.
PR13. Assess possible risks and socio-economic consequences of management decisions.
PR15. Organize the development and implementation of socio-economic projects, taking into account informational, methodical, material, financial, and personnel support.
PR17. To manage technological processes of IT production, to possess modern instrumental means of design and development of information systems, and to carry out quality control of software products.
PR19. Be able to use management methodology and tools: resources, innovations, risks, projects, changes, and quality.

The study of an academic discipline involves the achievement of such a qualification level of student training, for which he must:
a) to know

  • project management methodology and tools;
  • the main participants, their goals, functions, levels of responsibility, and authority in the project;
  • professional duties of the project manager;
  • the theory of project term management based on the methodology of inputs and outputs and process mapping of activities;
  • processes and tools for managing various functional areas of the project;
  • carry out systematic planning of the project at all phases of its life cycle;
  • types of teams, methods, and principles of their formation;
  • basic theories and concepts of human interaction in the project team, including issues of motivation, group dynamics, leadership, and conflict management;
  • main project controlling tools;
  • modern software tools and information technologies used in project management;

b) to be able to

  • to determine the cost of resources for the execution of works and operations under the project, to develop a cost budget for individual complexes of operations and the project as a whole;
  • to navigate in functionality and use software products in the process of project management;
  • determine the environment and expert areas of the project;
  • determine and analyze milestones and control events of each phase of the project life cycle;
  • apply tools and methods for managing work deadlines and the project schedule;
  • to organize project implementation, to select an effective project management “team”;
  • develop measures to motivate and stimulate project team members;
  • define and document the roles, responsibilities, and accountability of project team members;
  • identify project risks and compile a list of potential response actions;
  • choose software tools to solve the main tasks of project management;
  • to ensure effective control, as well as management of changes in the process of project implementation, its successful completion;
  • resolve conflict situations.
