Student-centered approaches to assessment in distance learning

On December 8, 2021, Iryna Shevchuk and Oksana Vaskiv, lecturers at the Department of Digital Economics and Business Analytics at the Faculty of Financial and Business Management of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, took part in the second webinar “Student Assessment: Encourage, Not Discourage”. webinars of the British Council Ukraine “Modern approaches to teaching”.

Speakers shared experiences and tools for assessing students that can be used in their work. In particular, Katie Wright, Deputy Director for Innovation, Advance HE, gave a talk on “How to Diversify Pandemic Assessment … and Forever”, Olga Yashenkova, Associate Professor of English Philology and Intercultural Communication, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv , revealing the topic of the presentation “Assessment in a remote format: practical life hacks”, shared practical life hacks – the assessment should involve students-peer review, as well as experiment with students. Maryan Slabinoga, Associate Professor of Computer Systems and Networks, Ivano-Frankivsk National Technical University of Oil and Gas, spoke at the meeting about the evaluation of future IT specialists in disciplines related to programming. The speaker stressed that the task of universities today in the training of IT professionals is not to let them get stuck at the initial level and to give space for consistent development. The speaker also outlined the practical skills of the applicants that he is allowed to evaluate.

The meeting was useful and interesting for teachers.

The tools of student assessment in modern realities considered at the webinar, as well as practical life hacks from the speakers should be taken into account in terms of students’ interest in studying and evaluating academic disciplines.
