Presentations of the “Data Journalism” course at Ivan Franko Lviv National University

On August 28, 2024, a press conference was held in the Mirror Hall of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, where the implementation of the “Data Journalism” course was presented. The course aims to train a new generation of journalists and public servants who are able to work with open data and know how to use it in their work. Ivan Franko National University became one of the four leading universities of Ukraine where this course is implemented.

The press conference was attended by the First Vice-Rector of LNU named after Ivan Franko Andriy Hukalyuk, Vice-Rector for Scientific and Pedagogical Work and Social Issues and Development Volodymyr Kachmar, Dean of the Faculty of Financial Management and Business Andriy Stasyshyn, Head of the Digital Development Department of the Lviv Regional Military Administration Maksym Stolyarchuk, Open Data Expert of the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine Yanina Lyubiva and head of the open data direction of the project “Support for digital transformation” (DTA) Nadiya Konashchuk.

From the Faculty of Finance and Business Management, Head of the Department of Public Administration and Business Management Hanna Komarnytska, associate professors Olena Gerasymenko and Olena Reshota, assistant of the department Nataliya Paterukha, graduates of the first (bachelor’s) and second (master’s) levels of higher education of the educational and professional program “Public administration and business management”.

After all, already in the first semester at the Faculty of Finance and Business Management, master’s students of the specialty 281 “Public Administration and Management” of the educational and professional program “Public Administration and Business Management” will have the opportunity to become one of the first in Ukraine to study this course. The course “Using open data in public governance” is an adapted version of “Data Journalism”, which was specially implemented at the Department of Public Administration and Business Management of the Faculty of Finance and Business Management in order to train highly qualified professionals in the public sphere.

Applicants of the second (master’s) level of higher education will be able to study:

– regulatory framework of open data;

– tools and methods of working with various sources;

– processing of machine-readable information;

– basics of data visualization;

– principles of working with open data in the public sector, etc.

The ability to work with open data is today a key competence for future specialists in the field of public management and administration. This will help our students become effective managers who can make informed decisions based on data.

The course was developed with the support of the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine and international partners (USAID and UK Dev) within the framework of the “Support of Digital Transformation” project.
