Academic integrity and ethics as important components of the preparation of higher education applicants

On October 23, 2023, the Department of Financial Management organized a meeting on the Microsoft Teams platform with students of the first (bachelor’s) and second (master’s) levels of education studying under the educational programs “Finance, Customs and Tax Affairs” and “Financial Management” on the topic “Academic integrity and ethics as important components of the training of higher education applicants”. The event was attended by teachers of the Department of Financial Management.

Speaker of the meeting, guarantor of the educational program and deputy. head of the department for scientific work prof. Ulyana Vatamanyuk-Zelinska focused on the importance of observing ethical scientific behavior, which is a component of academic culture and academic integrity in the scientific works of applicants, outlined ways to prevent academic plagiarism.

Master’s students Iryna Dunets, Yuliya Chepil and Iryna Shtunder joined the discussion of the topic, emphasizing in their speeches:

• requirements for compliance with the culture of academic integrity at Ivan Franko Lviv National University;
• the differences between academic plagiarism and citation errors in the scientific works of students of higher education;
• criteria for determining the originality of academic texts;
• types of violations of academic integrity and responsibility for them.
• Head of the department prof. Natalia Sytnyk noted that the main principles and fundamental values of academic integrity and ethics are honesty, trust, justice, respect and responsibility from both sides: both the teacher and the student. She emphasized the problems of expert research of academic texts and the causes of plagiarism in students’ scientific works. The professor noted that this problem is considered more deeply within the study of the academic discipline “Methodology and organization of scientific research.

At the same time, in order to deepen their own knowledge in the field of academic integrity, applicants were invited to attend the Ukrainian Education Quality Forum, which will be held on November 6, 2023 by the National Agency for Quality Assurance of Higher Education.

The organization of such events contributes to the understanding by all participants of the educational process of the need to observe the principles of academic integrity, and thus to the formation of a virtuous academic environment.
