On December 11, 2024, students of the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs of the Information Technology in Business program listened to a lecture on the topic of “Fundamentals of Digital Accessibility” from experts from the company ERAM Ukraine, Iryna SLISAREVSKAYA and Ihor PROTSIUK.
The event was also attended by teachers from the Department of Digital Economics and Business Analytics of the Faculty of Finance and Business Management.
During the lecture, the speakers talked about how barriers to obtaining information can be eliminated, in particular:
- what a digital solution should be to be convenient for everyone;
- what developers need to consider at the very beginning of work to make navigation convenient;
- how to ensure user interaction with the site regardless of the device format;
- how special software works, with the help of which people with disabilities can receive information on the network.
Such initiatives from the company EPAM Ukraine allow future specialists to become more aware of the digital accessibility of solutions, testing methods and the importance of its implementation for society and business, especially for Ukraine, when the number of people with disabilities is constantly growing due to the consequences of the military aggression of the Russian Federation.
In addition to getting acquainted with best practices and international standards of web accessibility, students were able to test the convenience of their usual services.
Teaching the basics of digital accessibility for people with special needs can be integrated into the educational process of the OP “Information Technologies in Business” through a number of areas. Students will study the principles of universal design, such as WCAG, which ensure the creation of accessible web interfaces and applications. Practical tasks will contribute to the development of inclusive digital solutions adapted to the needs of people with various types of limitations. Analysis of various business cases where digital accessibility contributes to both social responsibility and the expansion of the target audience. Interaction with public organizations will help students better understand the needs of people with disabilities and offer real solutions to support them.
Thus, the combination of knowledge about information technology and skills in ensuring digital accessibility contributes to the development of students as competent professionals who create technologies that are accessible to all, while meeting the requirements of modern business.
