“Digital Transformation of the Economy: New Vectors of Development, Opportunities and Challenges”: an international roundtable discussion on the educational programs “Digital Economy” of the first (bachelor’s) and second (master’s) levels of higher education

On February 20, 2025, an international roundtable on the topic “Digital Transformation of the Economy: New Vectors of Development, Opportunities and Challenges” was held at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. The event was organized by the Department of Digital Economics and Business Analytics of the Faculty of Finance and Business Management.

The main goal of the roundtable was to involve employers, representatives of government agencies, experts from the National Agency for Accreditation of Educational Programs, the scientific community of Ukraine, graduates and students in a productive and constructive discussion on the projects of the educational programs “Digital Economy” of the first (bachelor’s) and second (master’s) levels of higher education in the specialty C1 “Economics” of the field of knowledge C “Social Sciences, Journalism, Information and International Relations”.

The event was held in the format of an online conference via the Microsoft Teams platform.

The program of the event included reports by leading experts in the industry, including Mark Glubisz (ERP Consultant, CDW Corporation, USA), Andriy Kohut (Chief Technical Officer, UKEESS Software House, USA) and Bogdan Golod (Senior Business Analyst, Intellias, Poland). They shared their experience in implementing digital technologies in business and economy. They focused on the importance of adhering to the principles of ethics in business and economy, working in teams, and the role of cybersecurity in the system of economic security of the state.

Representatives of the delivery business, Director of LLC “SOFTSERVE INNOVATIONS” Andriy CHYPURKO and General Director of LLC “MЕЕST INTERNATIONAL” Iryna GLOVYAK, emphasized the importance of practice-oriented training that will prepare students for the real challenges of the labor market, teaching subjects in English, which is key for effective international communication and competitiveness of graduates in the global labor market, and the formation of strategic thinking. In general, cooperation between universities and companies is a key factor for the development of competitive specialists in the digital economy.

Special attention was paid to the issues of the relevance of opening the EPP “Digital Economy” of the first (bachelor’s) and second (master’s) levels of higher education and their subsequent accreditation in the context of digital transformation. Expert of the National Agency for Accreditation of Educational Programs in the Specialties 051 “Economics”, 073 “Management”, Doctor of Economics, Professor, Academician of the Academy of Economic Sciences of Ukraine Olga MASLAK drew the attention of those present to the fact that both ЕPPs meet modern challenges, providing relevant training content, close cooperation with business, flexibility of educational trajectories, international integration and a practice-oriented approach. It is important to update curricula in accordance with the dynamics of digital transformation, involve industry experts, introduce non-formal education and expand opportunities for academic mobility.

Representatives of the academic community, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Artur GORBOVYI and Doctor of Economic Sciences, Professor Larysa FEDORYSHYNA, emphasized the advisability of adding a separate educational component to the EPP, or topics within the context of various educational components, related to personnel management in the digital age, which would make it possible to study modern approaches to human resources management in the digital age, the possibilities of using HR technologies, Big Data and analytics in talent management, approaches to developing both one’s own soft skills, emotional intelligence and adaptability, and those of all company personnel, and to acquire team management skills.

During the discussion panel, participants considered the cooperation of higher education institutions with local governments and business. Head of the Digital Development Department of LOMA Maksym STOLYARCHUK emphasized the strategic role of digitalization in the development of the region and the country. He noted that the digital economy is a key factor in increasing Ukraine’s competitiveness, and training qualified specialists in this area is one of the priorities of state policy. It is important to involve students and young specialists in state digital initiatives and startups, which will contribute to the development of the “digital state” and the creation of new opportunities for youth.

An important topic was the material and technical support of the EPP and the expansion of the range of educational opportunities for students. Olga BONDAR, Head of the Partnership Department of LLC “MASTER:STREAM” once again emphasized that higher education applicants must have applied knowledge and licensed software should be used in the educational process, such as MASTER products, which have been successfully used by teachers and students of the department since this semester.

University graduates working in leading IT companies shared their vision of the necessary competencies for digital economy specialists related to risk management and digital security in entrepreneurship; cybersecurity and data protection; intellectual property in the digital sphere.

Together with students, the role of artificial intelligence in the development of economic processes and the need to adapt educational and professional programs to new challenges were discussed.

The event became a platform for the exchange of views between students, teachers and employers, which will contribute to the improvement of the educational and professional programs “Digital Economy” of the first (bachelor’s) and second (master’s) levels of higher education in the specialty C1 “Economics”.

Based on the results of the round table, recommendations were formed for the project (working) groups of educational programs to process the proposals of invited specialists and students and make appropriate adjustments to the EPP.

All participants of the international round table received certificates of advanced training.

The organizers express their gratitude to all speakers and participants for their active participation and constructive dialogue. It is planned that such meetings will become regular and will contribute to the further development of EPP and the digital economy in Ukraine.

The Ivan Franko National University of Lviv confirmed its role as a leading educational and scientific center that implements innovative approaches to learning in the conditions of digital transformation.
