Participation of teachers of the Department of Public Administration and Business Management in the open data intensive of the course “Data Journalism”

On August 27-30, 2024, teachers of the Department of Public Administration and Business Management of the Faculty of Finance and Business Management successfully completed an intensive 4-day training on the “Data Journalism” course. The open data intensive of the “Data Journalism” course was held at the initiative of the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine with the assistance of the “Support of Digital Transformation” project, funded by USAID and UK Dev. The partner in the implementation of the project is the Office of Effective Regulation of BRDO.

The training was successfully completed by the head of the Department of Public Administration and Business Management, professor Hanna Komarnytska, assistant professors of the Department Olena Reshota and Olena Gerasymenko, as well as assistant of the Department Natalia Paterukha.

Participation in the event was an important step in the implementation of an innovative approach to working with open data, which is implemented in the educational and professional program “Public Administration and Business Management”, which is taught to students of the second (master’s) level of higher education. After all, already in the first semester at the Faculty of Finance and Business Management, master’s students of the specialty 281 “Public Administration and Management” of the educational and professional program “Public Administration and Business Mangement” have the opportunity to become one of the first in Ukraine to study the academic discipline “Use of open data in public governance”, an adapted version of the course “Data Journalism”. The adapted course was introduced at the Department of Public Administration and Business Management with the aim of training highly qualified professionals in the field of public administration and business analytics.

During the intensive open data course “Data Journalism”, the teachers of the department had the opportunity to master such key topics as:

– introduction to open data and their sources;

– work with machine-readable information;

– data analysis methods and tools;

– data visualization;

– practical application of open data.

The intensive allowed the teaching staff of the Department of Public Administration and Business Management to gain valuable knowledge from leading industry experts:

Denys Gubashov and Oleksandr Oksymets – experts in open data and data analytics;

Nazarii Tuzyak – data analyst and data journalist at NGL.media;

Yuriy Ivshchenko – representative of the Lviv Regional State Administration, expert on implementation of open data;

Maria Tytarenko – associate professor of the School of Journalism and Communications of UCU.

Thanks to the acquired knowledge, our teachers are ready to introduce innovative approaches to the use of open data in the educational process. This will enable our students to gain advanced skills necessary for a successful career in public administration and business analytics.
