November 6, 2024 at the Department of Digital Economy and Business Analytics of the Faculty of Finance and Business Management of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, a methodical seminar on the topic “Academic Integrity VS Artificial Intelligence: Educational and Scientific Activities of Higher Education Graduates” was held in online and offline format, in which participants higher education holders of the master’s degree of the 1st and 2nd year of study at the OPP “Information technologies in business” specialty 051 “Economy”.

Within the framework of the seminar, the guarantor of the educational program, Doctor of Economics, Professor Iryna SHEVCHUK, scientific and pedagogical workers of the department, together with the applicants, discussed issues related to the peculiarities of the preparation of qualification (master’s) theses and publishing the results of students’ research in an honest manner. In particular, which documents regulate academic integrity at the legislative and university levels; what are the functions and spheres of responsibility of the scientific supervisor and the student of higher education; how to communicate with the academic supervisor in the process of writing qualification (master’s) theses; what services and programs can be used to check scientific work for plagiarism (Unicheck, Plag, Dupli checker, SmallSEOTools, StrikePlagiarism). Received checklists for supervisors and masters, which will help students, under the clear guidance and advice of a supervisor, to prepare their work and publications in compliance with the best research practices, to avoid the risks of violating academic integrity and questionable research practices.

Special attention was paid at the seminar to artificial intelligence, which provides unique opportunities in the creation of content for conducting and highlighting the results of scientific research. However, it needs to be handled with care, as the misuse of AI can lead to breaches of academic integrity, including falsification and deception – and this can negatively affect the reputation of the teacher and the student of higher education.

The areas of use of AI in scientific work were discussed, which vary depending on the specific research question and the goals of the work. It:

  • conducting a brainstorming of ideas regarding the research topic;
  • editing, correcting, paraphrasing, adjusting the style of a scientific text, etc.;
  • automatic translation from any language or translation of articles into English;
  • creating an abstract of articles;
  • formation of conclusions based on the conducted research;
  • selection of information sources;
  • writing thesis plans for speeches, reports and scientific presentations.

Also considered were the services that can be used to determine whether the text is generated by AI – these are GPTZero, OpenAI, Smodin, AI Detector, Plagiarism Checker by EduBirdie, Writer.

A significant part of the time was devoted to the issue of legislative regulation of the use of AI in scientific works. In June 2024, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted as a basis the project of the Law “On Academic Integrity”, the preamble of which states that it is unique in terms of checking for AI. Its adoption is necessary to ensure high standards of education and scientific research, to promote honesty and transparency in the educational process, and to prevent cases of plagiarism and other types of academic dishonesty.

The seminar ended with a productive discussion about the fact that it is quite real and appropriate to use artificial intelligence in scientific and educational activities. But for this use to be ethical, AI capabilities should not be used to quickly write papers instead of specialists, but for the purpose of improving articles and other materials and simplifying work.
